The perennial beauty of wildlife animals and why we love them so much. Not only visually but in their quirky behavior. In this scene, SD created all CGI, fur grooming, light setups, and textures. SD's expertise in creating photoreal film characters was extremely helpful.

The Treatment

D'Atelier wanted to create an all-CG spot for Porsche. The resulting scene presents the story of a chipmunk and its obsession with a car. The humor in it is enchanting and the story is told through rich, vivid colors, high-contrast visuals that complement the gleaming and stylish feel of Porsche. The stunning environment, the realistic fur sim work, the stylized lighting design, the incredibly detailed sim are all parts of a rigorous study in the digital narrative. It also inspires the audience to question what is real and what is fantasy, and this is what CG art is.

The Process

Creating a fully animated fur system that looks convincingly real was just part of SD's task. He made this scene in both Houdini and Cinema 4D and rendered it with CPU renderer Corona. CPU Rendering takes advantage of an octree system that sampled the lights more efficiently. After a few days of work, d'Atelier had a setup that gives his lighting the lush of a practical studio setup and took the notional render time on the complex shots down to 30 percent. With some additional work, the final per frame time at the end of production was just under an hour.
